Manuscript Preparation Guide

Work through each section to prepare your manuscript for submission

1

Shape Your Concept

Foundation

A book begins long before the first chapter. It starts with a clear, compelling concept.

  • Central message: Can you state your book's main argument or theme in one sentence?
  • Target reader: Who specifically are you writing for (not just "Christians," but pastors, young mothers, university students, etc.)?
  • Unique angle: What perspective or approach makes your book distinct?
  • Test viability: Could you explain your concept in 30 seconds? Could you sustain it over 20,000+ words?
Pro Tip

Clarity here saves you frustration later. A vague concept will create a vague book.

2

Ground Your Work in Research

Depth & Credibility

Solid research gives depth and credibility to your manuscript.

  • Strategic research: Explore the breadth of your topic, key theological positions, and existing works.
  • Ongoing depth: Build strong biblical foundations, use illustrations, and interact fairly with other scholars or voices.
  • Practical tools: Keep organized notes, track your sources properly, and avoid "research paralysis" (endless study with no writing).
  • Balance: Prioritize quality and relevance over quantity. Only keep material that serves your main concept.
Pro Tip

Ask yourself—does my research strengthen the message, or is it just adding bulk?

3

Build a Strong Structure

Organization

A clear structure is the skeleton of your book. Without it, ideas remain scattered.

  • Choose a framework: Will your book flow as Problem → Solution → Application, or as a Journey, Q&A, or Expositional study?
  • Outline chapters: Give each chapter a defined purpose, logical progression, and consistent style.
  • Book size: Think realistically about chapter count and length. Most Christian living titles fall between 40,000–60,000 words.
  • Tools for readers: Consider adding discussion questions, reflection prompts, or case studies.
Pro Tip

If a reader only remembered one thing from each chapter, what would it be?

4

Refine Supporting Elements

Materials

Before submission, prepare the extra materials that help your book move forward.

  • Author bio: Who are you, and why are you the right person to write this book?
  • Book blurb/summary (300–500 words): What is the book about, and what impact will it have?
  • Audience definition: What need or question in their lives does this book address?
  • Competing books: Identify 2–3 similar titles and explain how yours is different.
5

Writing Discipline & Readiness

Practice

Publishing is not only inspiration; it's discipline.

  • Set a schedule: Establish realistic writing goals and milestones.
  • Finish before polishing: Don't get stuck editing your first chapter forever—get a full draft down.
  • Seek feedback: Share sample chapters with trusted readers or mentors.
